Four important tools

Giving instructions

  • Making sure your students know what they are meant to be doing is essential and good, clear instructions are the way to do it!

Using the board

  • Find out when the board is most useful in the classroom and how to use it effectively. For example, asking students to write answers on the board is a great way to get students practicing their spelling, but you must remember that they’ll be embarrassed if they are wrong, so get the class to spell it together.

Encouraging interaction between students

  • Find out how to get your class talking. For example, splitting the class into teams when playing games will increase conversation practice.

Arranging seats

  • This is an important tool in the classroom and will allow you to better address the need of your class in different situations. For example, seat students in a semi circle for presentations but into separate areas of the class for group work.

Student Levels

An introduction to different student levels, this will help you to tailor your lessons to the needs of the class and will also help you to understand the limitations of each level. This will help you to make your lessons as effective as possible.

Listening

  • Real-life listening scenarios. For example, teaching pronunciation – words are often pronounced differently from how they are written, e.g. “Is not…” becomes “Isn’t….”
  • Lesson progression: the lesson should move through various stages. For example, students will begin with a general understand but by the end of the lesson this should have develop to an in-depth understanding.
  • Listening tasks. For example, filling in a timetable or chart, answering true/false questions or statements.
  • Incorporating songs into listening lessons.

Reading

Ideas for reading follow-up activities, for example, discussion/debate based on themes from the text.

Additional activities to use before, during or after students have read the text. Song lyrics are also very effective for these exercises and can be used to combine reading and listening activities. For example:

  • Before – get your students to mind-map possible vocabulary that is related to the topic
  • During – write down sentences from the text on separate pieces of paper then jumble them up and ask students to put them in order.
  • After – ask student to write a reply to the writer.
